Why Martin’s Work Matters

Field Knowledge Meets Educational Excellence

Martin’s approach comes from thousands of hours actually in these landscapes. He’s not writing from research papers alone — he’s walked every trail he recommends, observed birds in every season, and planned riverside picnics in varying conditions. That real experience shapes everything he creates.

The core belief? Well-informed visitors become better stewards of nature. When someone understands the ecosystem they’re visiting — why certain areas are protected, which species live there, how seasons change things — they naturally make more responsible choices. That’s what drives Martin’s educational approach.

Every article gets the same rigor he’d apply to scientific research. Data verification, field observations, current visitor conditions, and practical logistics all matter. But it’s written for real people planning real trips — not academic journals. Accessible without being superficial. Detailed without being overwhelming.

“The best outdoor experiences happen when people understand what they’re looking at and why it matters.”

— Martin Novotný

Core Principles

Accuracy First

Every fact gets verified. Field observations, ecological data, visitor logistics — nothing goes out without confirmation.

Sustainable Practices

Guides visitors toward low-impact experiences. Protecting these places matters as much as sharing them.

Honest Recommendations

Real conditions, seasonal challenges, accessibility limits — the actual story, not just the highlights.

Continuous Learning

Nature research evolves. Martin stays current with conservation findings and visitor management innovations.

Active Research & Projects

Ongoing investigations shaping future educational materials

Vltava River Seasonal Conditions Study

Documenting water conditions, wildlife activity, and optimal visitor periods across Český Krumlov region. Collected data over 18 months to create accurate seasonal guides. Results inform current riverside picnic planning recommendations.

Ongoing since 2024

Podyjí Trail Accessibility Assessment

Evaluating all major hiking routes for difficulty levels, physical accessibility, and seasonal usability. Creating detailed guides that match visitors with appropriate trails. Currently completed 85% of reserve system assessment.

In progress

Třeboň Wetlands Bird Population Monitoring

Continuing long-term surveys started during university. Tracking population shifts, seasonal migration patterns, and species distribution changes. Data helps optimize birdwatching guide accuracy and conservation efforts.

Since 2010

Thermal Spring Geology & Heritage Documentation

Researching geological origins of Czech thermal springs and their historical significance. Developing comprehensive guides covering water chemistry, wellness properties, and accessibility information for major thermal parks.

Questions About Martin’s Work

What got you started in nature tourism?

During my first university summer in 2010, I volunteered doing bird surveys at Třeboň. I’d hike out at dawn, spend hours quietly observing, and catalog what I saw. There’s something about field research — you’re not just reading about ecosystems, you’re living in them. After that summer, I knew this was what I wanted to do long-term. The combination of science, outdoor time, and actually helping people experience nature responsibly just clicked for me.

Why focus on educational content rather than just guiding?

I spent five years doing guided tours with the national park — leading groups, answering questions, watching people discover these places. But I realized I could reach way more people through educational materials. Plus, when someone reads a detailed guide before visiting, they make smarter decisions. They know what to expect, they understand why areas are protected, they come prepared. It’s the same mission — helping people experience nature responsibly — just on a larger scale.

How do you stay current with changing conditions?

I’m out in the field regularly — probably 30-40 days per year across the different regions. I walk trails, observe species, check water conditions, and talk with current park staff. I also review scientific publications on ecosystem changes and follow conservation news. The thing is, conditions shift. Weather patterns change things, populations fluctuate, visitor impacts vary by season. So materials can’t just be static — they need regular updates based on what’s actually happening.

What’s the biggest misconception about Czech nature tourism?

People often think these areas are just “nice places to visit” without understanding they’re complex ecosystems. Protected reserves exist for reasons — specific species live there, delicate habitats need protection. The misconception is that visiting and protecting are opposite things. They’re not. When you understand what you’re looking at and why it matters, you naturally visit responsibly. That’s exactly why detailed education matters. It transforms casual tourists into informed visitors who actually care about preservation.

What would surprise people about birdwatching at Třeboň?

Most people think it’s just about spotting rare species, but honestly? The reward is patience and attention. You might see 15 common species on one visit and feel like it’s “not worth it.” But if you understand those 15 birds — their behavior, why they’re there, how they interact — it becomes fascinating. Plus, seasonal timing matters enormously. May migration is chaos and activity everywhere. December is quieter but different birds. Understanding the rhythm changes everything about the experience.

How do you approach writing guides for different experience levels?

I’m very intentional about it. A guide for experienced hikers looks completely different from one for families with kids. Different trails, different information priorities, different challenges. I’ve watched people of all fitness levels in these environments, so I know where beginners struggle, where intermediate folks get bored, where experienced hikers find real challenges. That real observation is the foundation — not assumptions about what different groups “should” want.
